An edublog about veterinary education – past, present and future by Kim Whittlestone
In May 2006 I joined the LIVE (Lifelong and Independent Veterinary Education) Team at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) having qualified from here in 1989. After I qualified I spent a couple of years as a locum vet in a small animal practice in Portishead near Bristol alongside being part of the (then) innovative interactive videodisc pathology project at the University of Bristol – using BBC master computers and Philips videodisc players to teach medical, veterinary and dental students pathology in new and exciting ways…
Since then I have been involved in various uses of technology to enhance the educational experience of medics, vets and dentists. Between 1997 and 2006 I was based at Cambridge Clinical School, driving the technology enhanced learning agenda for medical students and staff - as well as creating the schools virtual learning environment we were just starting to provide podcasts of clinical examinations and “introductions to topics” for clinical students when I left. Initial response to these from students was “give us more”. We also ran a couple of projects to get students recording their own video-diaries which was absolutely fascinating.
